Archbishop Homily: Lent is About Coming Home (The Pilot).

Following is the text of the homily delivered by Cardinal-designate Seán P. O’Malley at the closing Mass of the 2006 Boston Catholic Men’s Conference: "The purpose of Lent is to jettison the ballast we carry through life, not in terms of shedding pounds by dieting, but letting go of the “extra baggage,” those things that keep us separated from God and from others. Lent is a wake-up call, like Jonah’s warning to the people of Nineveh. Lent is about coming home, like the prodigal son."

Shining Examples (Lowell Sun).

It is far better to light candles than curse the darkness, and who knows better about lighting candles than a devout Catholic? Yet too many have addressed the recent, severe flaws exposed in the Catholic Church with criticism and rejection instead of reform and reconciliation. Two Lowell natives, however, are carrying candles bright enough to light the way for many of their Catholic brothers and sisters.

Lowell Twins Put Faith to the Test (Lowell Sun).

When they were preschoolers, Midge Landry would take her identical-twin sons, Scot and Roger, to Mass every day at St. Michael Church in Lowell. It was the simple act of a woman of strong faith, yet it set an example that would ultimately influence her sons' lives. Roger was ordained a priest by then-Bishop Sean O'Malley for the Diocese of Fall River in 1999; and in 2005, Scot co-founded the highly successful Boston Catholic Men's Conference.

Hundreds from Diocese of Fall River attend Catholic Men's Conference (The Anchor).

For Tony Andrade, actor Jim Caviezel's speech at a men's conference last weekend was a life-altering experience. Caviezel, who played Jesus in last year's movie, "The Passion of the Christ," challenged his listeners to become "warriors" for Christ, and to step into the world and express their faith in public.

Men called to holiness at first annual Men's Conference (The Pilot).

More than 2,000 men gathered March 19 at Boston College High School to celebrate the Solemnity of St. Jospeh with Archbishop Sean P. O'Malley, "The Passion of the Christ" star James Caviezel and other speakers at the first Boston Catholic Men's Conference.

At First Annual Catholic Conference, Men's Amens (Dorchester Reporter).

The communal singing was kind of shaky, despite the best efforts (and fine saxophone-playing) of the 10-man Brotherhood of Hope band. But Catholic men are often ornery when it comes to hymns, even rousing contemporary ones. Otherwise, the first annual Boston Catholic Men's Conference (BCMC) held last Saturday, March 19, at BC High was a joyous success. Over 2,000 men (double the organizers' original goal) and 80 priests (including Dorchester pastors) packed the folding chairs and bleachers at the new McNeice Pavilion to hear challenges and encouragement from a line-up of five nationally known speakers, including "The Passion of the Christ" star Jim Caviezel.

First Annual Boston Catholic Men's Conference at B.C. High 3/19 (Boston City Paper).

They're coming by the hundreds. Once word got out that one of the keynote speakers at the first Boston Catholic Men's Conference (BCMC) was going to be the tough guy who played Jesus in The Passion of the Christ, registrations started pouring in from as far away as San Francisco and British Columbia. Busloads are coming from the suburbs, but plenty of locals are signing up too.

BC High to hold Conference for Catholic Men (Dorchester Reporter).

He was twice struck by lightening during the filming of "The Passion of the Christ" and survived. Now, unless a blot from the blue gets him on a third try, actor Jim Caviezel will be in Dorchester telling an expected audience of well over 1,000 guys about his experiences making the picture.

Men of God (Fall River Anchor).

Last March, I saw one of the real signs of the “new springtime” in the Church to which Pope John Paul II frequently refers. It was the annual Catholic Men’s Conference for the Diocese of Trenton, New Jersey. I had been invited to give a talk on what it means to be a real Christian man according to the thought of Pope John Paul II. There were over one thousand men in attendance, ranging in age from boys who had just received their driving permits to feisty nonagenarians.

Preaching Christ's Passion (Fall River Anchor).

Scripture scholars often describe the four Gospels as “passion accounts with very long introductions.” This is because the preaching of the apostles — and the earliest Christian writings —focused above all on the details of Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection.
